Headings B3H and B3PA billet piercing press includes a pair of independent mandrel carriers 14, 27 which are alternatively locatable along the press axis by movable pushers 25, 26. The carriers are supported by platforms 20, 21 and the pushers comprise rollers mounted on levers 23 pivoted to the platforms. The levers are pivoted by hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders. The carriers have a recessed adaptor 15 to receive a pin 17 on the upper crosshead 2. A clamp plate 12 is resiliently supported by the crosshead 2 and has guide flanges for the carriers. The upper crosshead is moved by a ram 1 to move a mandrel to pierce a billet held in a lined container 5 mounted on the fixed lower crosshead 4. A mandrel guide and stripper 10 is mounted on columns 11 between the crossheads. The mandrel 28 not in use may be cleaned, cooled and oiled or replaced. The mandrel may be withdrawn through an opening 29, 30. The press may be used to form a shell or bottle from a hot billet. |
