A time-of-flight mass spectrometer for the acquisition of daughter ion spectra comprising a mass filter 2 for selecting parent ions, means for orthogonally injecting the selected parent ions in a direction perpendicular to their original flight path, a collision cell 7 for fragmenting the parent ions by collisionally induced dissociation (CID) to produce daughter ions, means 9, 10 and 11 for accelerating the fragmented ions and means for detecting the daughter ions. Preferably, the mass filter 2 is a quadrupole mass filter, and the means for accelerating the daughter ions incorporates a 'lift' region between diaphragms 9 and 10, and an acceleration region between diaphragms 10 and 11. The apparatus is known by the generic abbreviation 'Q-tof -TOF'. |
