Ores, furnace loss and roasted products to be reduced are treated concurrently, at temp. below the m.pt. of the metals, with a measured out amt. of hydrocarbon gas, the C and H content of which together, but not the C content alone, are sufficient to reduce the material. For upper limit, =1C atom is available for 1 O atom in material to be reduced (I). Thus, for reduction of Fe2O3 with CH4: Fe2O3 + 3 CH7 = 2 Fe + 3 CO + 6 H2 For lower limit: Fe2O3 + CH4 = 2 Fe + CO + 2 H2O. During reduction, granular to powdery (I) fills whole furnace cross-section, at least in sections (partic. at inlet) with its bulk (this ensures uniform contact of solid and gaseous phase). Pref. (I) contains several metals to be reduced, and gives metal mixture or alloy. Pref. inert ceramics are charged to furnace together with (I), to be worked up to solid solutions.
|
