Novel 2 - oxo - 2,3 - dihydroindole - 3 - carboxanilides of the formula in which X and Y are each H, F, Cl, Br, CF 3 , OCF 3 , C 1-5 alkyl or C 1-5 alkoxy; R 1 is H, C 1-6 alkyl, C 2-4 alkenyl, CF 3 CH 2 -, or phenyl- (C 1-3 alkyl); and R 2 is naphthyl, phenyl or mono- or di-substituted phenyl wherein each substituent is selected from F, Cl, Br, C 1-4 alkyl, C 1-3 alkoxy, C 1-3 alkylthio, CF 3 or -OCF 3 and base salts thereof with pharmacologically acceptable cations are prepared by reacting the appropriate 2-oxo-2,3-dihydroindoles with either phenyl isocyanates of the formula R 2 NCO or with ureas of the formula wherein R<SP>11</SP> is aryl, or by reacting the appropriate 2.- oxo - 2.3 - dihydroindole - 3 - carboxylate esters with amines of the formula R 2 NH 2 . Pharmaceutical compositions, suitable for oral, parenteral or topical administration, and having anti-inflammatory activity contain the above novel compounds or salts in admixture with pharmaceutically acceptable carriers or diluents.
