5-Nitro-thiazole derivs. - with antiprotozoal and anthelmintic activity. Title cpds. of formula (I) (where R1 is H or 1-3C alkyl and R2 is alkyl aralkyl) are prepd. by cyclizing a cpd. of formula (II): (where Y is the residue of a reactive ester, e.g. Y is halogen or the residue of an aromatic sulphonic acid). (I) are partic. actives against trichomonads, amoebae and schistosomes. They may also be treated with oxidizing agents to give pharmacologically valuable 1-(5-nitro-2-thiazolyl)-imidazolidin-2-ones.
