<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup apparatus comprising a shutter button that accepts instructions required for shooting both an animation and a still picture without switching a shooting mode. <P>SOLUTION: An animation/still picture parallel recording mode is set by a mode dial 94 and when a shutter button 80 is pressed to a third depressed position S3, recording of the animation is started first (S23). When the shutter button 80 is returned to an initial position S0 thereafter and the shutter button 80 is further pressed to a second depressed position S2 ("Y" in S28), a still picture recording operation is started (S30) during animation recording ("Y" in S29).
