PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for detecting, with an acoustic signal, a defect of a honeycomb structure made of porous ceramics having cells partitioned with a cell wall used as a catalyst carrier for purifying exhaust gas or a filter for clarifying particulates. SOLUTION: In the method of inspecting the defect of the honeycomb structure made of porous ceramics having cells partitioned with a cell wall used as the catalyst carrier for purifying exhaust gas or the filter for clarifying particulates, the acoustic signal that is inputted to the honeycomb structure via a dry coupling in contact with the honeycomb structure and propagates through the honeycomb structure is received via the dry coupling coming in contact with the honeycomb structure, and the defect is detected based on the received acoustic signal information.
