PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the need of a rope brake 48 which was necessary in addition to a drive device 40 in an elevator having the drive device 40 with a main rope 3 wrapped around a sheave 42 and reciprocatingly moving a car 1 and a belt transmission mechanism 51 driving while pressing the circular arc area of the main rope 3 toward the sheave 42. SOLUTION: The rope brake 52 pressing the main rope 3 toward the sheave 42 is disposed in series with the belt transmission mechanism 51 in the longitudinal direction of the main rope 3 to incorporate the function of the rope brake in the drive device 40.
