PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a user to easily find a user's sheet even if a tray is not designated in a sheet sorter having a plurality of trays for placing sheets thereon and sorting the sheets by switching the trays for placing the sheets thereon. SOLUTION: Sensors 87 detecting the presence or absence of the sheets are installed on the trays 81 to 86. When the tray is not designated, the tray on which the sheets are not placed is preferentially selected as the tray on which the sheets are to be placed. When there are a plurality of trays on which the sheets are not placed, the tray positioned on the upper side is selected. Also, when there is no tray on which the sheets are not placed, the tray in which an elapsed time after the sheet is lastly placed thereon is longest is selected. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
