PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the quality of an image formed as much as possible by a photographic printer which exposes and forms the image on a photographic sensitive material through exposure by scanning with a laser beam. SOLUTION: In the photographic printer provided with an exposure head 11 which forms an image through exposure by scanning the photographic sensitive material PS with the laser beam LB and an exposure managing means EM of managing the operation of the exposure head 11, the exposure managing means EM detects variation in gradient of relationship between density and an exposure quantity on the photographic sensitive material PS obtained through test printing to estimate whether improper exposure of a high-density area is performed based upon detection information on the variation in gradient, decreases the scanning speed of the laser beam LB when judging that improper exposure is performed, and also decreases the light intensity of the laser beam LB adaptively to the scanning speed of the laser beam LB so as to obtain desired print density.
