PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator having a swing stop device for a main rope capable of reducing noise such as hammering noise by suppressing an increase in vibration produced in the main rope even if a vibration frequency forming an input factor from the outside nears the natural frequency of the main rope. SOLUTION: In this swing stop device for the main rope, the elevator 1 comprises a pair of sheaves 5, the main rope 9, and the swing stop device 10. The pair of sheaves 5 are positioned apart from each other in a direction crossing a shaft 3 and fixed to a car 2. The main rope 9 is stretched across the pair of sheaves 5 to suspend the car 2 in the shaft 3. At least one swing stop device 10 is disposed in a direction crossing the main rope 9, comprises tolerances in a direction apart from the main rope 9 and a direction for pressing it against the main rope 9 from a position where it touches the main rope 9, and fixed to the car 2.
