PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the size of a pulse generation circuit for generating a drive pulse used for driving a solid-state image pickup element. SOLUTION: In a method for driving the solid-state image pickup element, the solid-state image pickup element is driven by the drive pulse outputted by the pulse generation circuit. The pulse generation circuit comprises a vertical synchronization signal, a horizontal synchronization signal, a trigger pulse capable of adjusting rise timing freely, a first counter that is initialized by the vertical synchronization signal and counts the horizontal synchronization signal, a second counter that is initialized by the horizontal synchronization signal and counts the trigger pulse, and a means for allowing the state of the drive pulse to transit according to first and second counter values.
