A tracheostomy device has a short tube ( 10, 10', 10 '') terminating adjacent the internal end of an opening ( 4 ) into the trachea ( 2 ). A flange ( 13 ) secures the external end of the tube and a retainer ( 14, 45, 59, 61 ) secures the internal end of the tube against the surface of the trachea ( 2 ). The device also includes a seal ( 3, 60 ), which engages the surface of the trachea ( 2 ) above the opening, and a suction passage ( 34 ) extending externally by which secretions can be removed.
