PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color image forming apparatus capable of easily preventing color muddiness due to color mixing of toner. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus, a plurality of stations are placed side by side, toner images are formed on respective image bearing members 40 at those stations, and the color toner images formed at the respective stations are sequentially transferred from the image bearing members directly or indirectly through an intermediate transfer member to record a multicolor image on a transfer material during transport, wherein toner charging ability of a dry developer used at an upstream side station is made smaller than toner charging ability of a dry developer used at a downstream side station, and charge imparting ability at the upstream side station is made larger than charge imparting ability at the downstream side station.
