PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for turning a hollow cylindrical workpiece, wherein a problem such as a chatter vibration is solved, and a highly precise cylindrical base body etc. for a photosensitive element of electrophotography is formed. SOLUTION: In the method for turning the surface of the cylindrical workpiece, a core composed of a plurality of thin sheet shape elastic elements (1, 6) fitted on a shaft via spacers 2 is inserted into the hollow cylindrical workpiece, and the surface of the cylindrical workpiece is machined by cutting. The thin sheet shape elastic elements composing the core are composed of laminated elements of at least two or more kinds of thin sheet shape elastic elements having different hardness and sizes.
