<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact surface mounting machine while adopting the structure for covering the whole device by means of the cover for sound isolation/dust prevention containing also a tray type component feeder. <P>SOLUTION: The surface mounting machine is equipped with tray feeders 6 and 7 at the side of a conveyer 3. The tray feeders 6 and 7 are constituted of a palette 32 for storing mounting components, a palette storage device 31, a palette carrying in and out device 33, and a lifting and lowering device 34. While storing the palette 32, the palette storage device 31 is provided with two or more palette storages (rail 42) in the up and down direction which is supported freely of carrying in and out a palette in the horizontal direction intersecting the transportation direction of the conveyer 3 provided on a base 2. The palette carrying in and out device 33 possesses a removable engaging member (clamp member 66) on the palette 32. The removable engaging member is moved horizontally between the palette storage position which is in the state of storing the palette in the palette storage and the component adsorption position at the outer side of the palette storage device. The lifting and lowering device 34 makes the palette carrying in and out device 33 go up and down. The palette carrying in and out device 33 and the lifting and lowering device 34 are arranged at the inner side of the base 2 of the surface mounting machine 1 viewed from above.
