PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a deterioration in image quality due to thickening of ink with time. SOLUTION: After moving a carriage 504 to a home position to effect preliminary ejection, the carriage is moved by a distance L1 to an image formation starting point to start recording an image. In this case, judgement is made to ensure whether there is any ejection port which elapses a specified time without ejection after effecting preliminary ejection, prior to start forming an image. If there is any such a port, the first half path is recorded without using the ejection port for recording. If there is none, all the ejection ports are used to perform recording. In the former case, the carriage is moved to a preliminary ejection position 502 after completion of recording to perform preliminary ejection, while using the ejection port not used for the first half path is used to perform recording the second half path.
