PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To readapt an echo canceller quickly by estimating occurrence of blocking phenomenon, determining an optimal value of coupling amount for detecting speech by increasing the coupling amount gradually thereby suppressing blocking phenomenon. SOLUTION: If speech existing state sustains when an echo canceller control section 20 judges existence of speech and adaptive calculation of an adaptive filter 7 is stopping, an estimated coupling amount may be smaller that an actual coupling amount. Since adaptive calculation is stopping although a speech existing state is sustaining, coupling amount is small and an incorrect decision may be made that echo has been suppressed sufficiently. Control is made to approach the optimal value of adaptive calculation by increasing the estimated value of coupling amount gradually as the time duration of speech prolongs.
