PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cyclic flaw detecting method of a strip or column capable of rapidly determining the presence of a cyclic flaw, especially a fine cyclic flaw with high precision without performing complicated or troublesome setting or adjustment even if the pitch of the cyclic flaw is changed by the replacement of a roll or the abrasion of the roll, and a cyclic flaw detector. SOLUTION: In the cyclic flaw detecting method of the strip or column for storing images obtained by continuously imaging the surface of the moving strip or column in a memory device and superposing the stored images one upon another by image processing to detect the cyclic flaw, the (S)-number of images F are cut from the stored images at a predetermined pitch (length) in a longitudinal direction and the brightness values of the cut the (S)-number of images F are added to for a composite image G while a series of processings for operating the dispersion of the brightness values of the formed synthetic image G are performed with respect to a pitch according to the (Q)-number of ways and, on the basis of the composite image G imparting the maximum dispersion value among the (Q)-number of the composite images, the cyclicity of a flaw or the cyclic flaw is detected.
