1,189,048. Process for preparing aminonitriles. W. R. GRACE & CO. 30 April, 1968 [8 May, 1967], No. 20475/68. Heading C2C. Process for the preparation of an aminonitrile which comprises the steps of (1) reacting a mixture of an amine, formaldehyde and hydrogen cyanide in the presence of an acid catalyst which is preferably sulphuric acid present in amounts varying from 1À5 to 20% by weight, and thereby generating heat; (2) removing heat from a reacted mixture obtained from said reaction, preferably by indirect heat exchange with a heat-transfer liquid circulating in indirect heat exchange relationship, (3) transferring said heat to an initial mixture of said reactants to raise the temperature thereof to a temperature in the range 40-130‹ C. and (4) feeding said heated mixture to a reaction zone for step (1). Preferably conditions are such that over the whole of the reaction time there is no net transfer of heat to or from the reaction mixture and that the reaction is carried out under autogenous pressure. The amine, formaldehyde and hydrogen cyanide reactants are preferably combined in a ratio of 1: 3: 3 up to 1: 3À6: 3À6. |
