PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lubricant composition as the ultimate power transmission liquid, exhibiting improved friction durability and friction-velocity characteristics to paper, steel and advanced friction materials such as carbon fiber and most friendly to the sensitivity of the skin, relating health problems, safety and environmental problems. SOLUTION: The friction modifying agent is produced by reacting a polyamine with an aliphatic monoacid such as oleic acid or isostearic acid under a condition to form a mixture of a 1,2-disubstituted imidazoline-containing compound and is optionally incorporated with a lubricating base oil. The invention further provides a friction modifying compound having improved friction property and handling property by further acylating the residual active nitrogen with a monoacid, a diacid or an anhydride.
