PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyester film for a transfer type image protecting film base material which excels in the balance between surface smoothness and handling properties and can maintain high surface glossiness after transfer of a protecting layer. SOLUTION: The film has a thickness of≤6μm, an arithmetic mean roughness (Ra) of at least one film surface of 0.031-0.045μm, a rate of change in length in the longer direction of the film at the point of time of reaching 200°C of -1.5% to +1.0%, and a surface orientation of the film of≥0.165.
