PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reflection-type encoder capable of highly accurately setting the relative positional relationship between a light source and a light-detecting part. SOLUTION: A light-emitting chip 11 and a light-receiving chip 12 are formed into a two-layer structure, and the light-receiving chip 12 is arranged in front of the light-emitting chip 11 to a detecting object 16. The emitting light Y1 from the light-emitting chip 11 is emitted toward the detecting object 16, by passing through a through-hole 14a of a light-receiving side frame 14 and a through-hole 12a of the light-receiving chip 12. Thus, since the through-hole 12a substantially becomes a light source window by using the through-hole 12a of the light-receiving chip 12 as an optical path, the relative position between the light source on the light-receiving chip 12 and a photodiode 12b as a light-detecting part, can be highly accurately set.
