During the detection of leaks, the signal emitted by the test gas is covered by disturbing influences, said disturbing influences fading away with increases of the vacuum in the container. A lower display threshold (AG) is calculated according to the negative incline of the amount signal (MS). The amount signal (MS) is not reduced to zero when a zero function is activated, but is raised to the height of the display threshold. Each time the lower display threshold is exceeded, a leak is recognised. As a result, the most possible sensitivity of the leak display is ensured at each moment in time.
