Fire extinguisher comprises an extinguishing agent container (1), a removal unit (5) by which the extinguishing agent can be controlled and a pyrotechnic pressure-producing unit (4) with an ignition powder and a pressure-producing powder. The ignition powder is ignited by a spark-producing unit. A controlled combustion of the pressure-producing powder takes place after igniting the powder so that a predetermined pressure is formed in the extinguishing agent container. Preferred Features: The pressure formed in the extinguishing agent container is held for at least 10 seconds. The pressure-producing unit is structured to form a pressure in the extinguishing agent container within 1-40 seconds.
