A process for the separation of a mixture of at least two alkyl phenols, which have close boiling points but differ significantly in steric hinderance about the hydroxyl group and/or polarity comprises adding a linear alkene having from 10 to 13 carbon atoms and a boiling point within 30‹ C. of the more polar alkyl phenol to the mixture and distilling the resulting mixture. Preferred alkenes are 1,2-alkenes e.g. dodecene- 1. Using this process 2,6-dimethyl phenol has been separated from a mixture of 2,6-dimethyl phenol, 2-methyl phenol, 3-methyl phenol and 4-methyl phenol in the Example.
