A jaw clip (10) has two jaws (12, 14) which are pivotally connected to each other by a hinge (16). A spring (18) biases the two jaws (12, 14) toward each other to a closed position. Each jaw (12, 14) includes a non-slip layer (28, 30) on its respective hair-engaging surface (32, 34). The non-slip layer (28, 30) includes a base portion (36, 38) and a plurality of bristle-like projections (40, 42). The material used for the non-slip layer (28, 30) has a relatively large coefficient of friction as needed to grip a user's hair with enough friction to sustain engagement between the hair and the clip (10) to prevent the clip from inadvertently slipping out of the hair.
