<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To securely prevent cancellation of lockup by mistake which can occur in a state with a select lever being at an intermediate position between a travelling range and an engine brake range. <P>SOLUTION: The range recognition device of the automatic transmission 6 has a plurality of terminals 3a to 3e to be respectively connected by operation of the select lever 1 and is equipped with an inhibiter switch 3 for outputting range signals P, R, N, D, L according to the terminal and a controller 4 for recognizing ranges P, R, N, D or an L-range demanded by an driver according to input of the range signals from the switch 3. The switch 3 has a terminal 3d for outputting a D-range signal D for demanding a D-range for appropriately selecting a speed-change ratio according to a driving state and a terminal 3e for outputting the L-range signal L for demanding the engine brake range for selecting a predetermined low speed-change ratio.
