<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve high-luminance natural white balance while minimizing a signal process using a luminance value. <P>SOLUTION: A first face area 62a slightly inclines to a second face area 62b, and enters in the direction of an optical axis OA with respect to virtual green light LG2' projected onto a screen SC via a projection lens 70 after reflected in a virtual face area 62b' that has no inclination. A projection width between the rays of green light LG1 and LG2 projected on the screen SC via the projection lens 70 after reflected by a slightly bent dichroic film 62 is narrower than a projection width obtained in the case where the dichroic film 62 is made flat. This means that the presence of a cross dichroic prism 60 makes it possible to reduce the width of a green projection image on the screen SC in a direction (image-plane lateral direction) perpendicular to a cross line CL.
