PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic disk drive device capable of surely recovering writing characteristics without adversely affecting other elements and without increasing start time, and a method for compensating its characteristics. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a magnetic disk having a data area, a magnetic head positioned in an area different from the data area of the magnetic disk or outside the magnetic disk before starting and loaded to the data area of the magnetic disk after the starting, and a means for supplying a dummy current lower in value than a normal write current to the magnetic head in a state where the magnetic head is positioned in the area different from the data area of the magnetic disk or outside the magnetic disk immediately after the starting.
