<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic registration control device which is of a simple construction and free from a delay in signal, and can perform an ON/OFF operation of registration control in a precise timely manner when joining pieces of paper together, and to provide an automatic registration control method. <P>SOLUTION: In a multi-color printing machine which operates a plate cylinder phase based on an operating input for registration, the automatic registration control device to which the automatic registration method is applied, breaks the operating input when joining pieces of paper when a web of an existing take-up reel and a web of a new take-up reel are joined together during printing. In addition, the operating input is broken before the passage of a prescribed length of a paper joining part through the printing parts of printing units 120 and 130 and the operating input is made after the passage of a prescribed length of the paper joining part through the printing parts.
