PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate an image with high image quality in a short time by using an inexpensive color area CCD. SOLUTION: A photoelectric conversion means has a plurality of two-dimensionally arranged pixels and any one of filters of primary colors of red, green and blue for each pixel, and an illuminating means illuminates an original document by light sources of three primary colors of red, green and blue. The photoelectric conversion means and the illuminating means are used to composite the output of the red filter pixel of the photoelectric conversion means at the time of lighting the red light source of the illuminating means to illuminate the read document, the output of a green filter pixel of the photoelectric conversion means at the time of lighting the green light source of the illuminating means to illuminate the read original document, and the output of the blue filter pixel of the photoelectric conversion means at the time of lighting the blue light source of the illuminating means to illuminate the original document, thereby generating a single image.
