PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scanning sonar which can search a wide area. SOLUTION: By transmitting ultrasonic waves from an oscillator of a spherical transmitter-receiver 1, an umbrella-shaped transmission beam TB is formed around the transmitter-receiver 1. By controlling the phase and the size of a receiving opening of each oscillator of the transmitter-receiver 1 by a reception beam formation section of the scanning sonar, a reception beam RB is formed. The reception beam RB is formed such that its depression angle becomes equal to the depression angleαof the transmission beam TB. The vertical spread angleθ<SB>V</SB>of the reception beam RB is controlled so that it becomes smaller as a search distance D becomes longer. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
