PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for suppressing decomposition of a ketal or an acetal and a method for manufacturing the ketal or the acetal while suppressing decomposition thereof. SOLUTION: The decomposition of the ketal or the acetal derived from anα-hydroxyketone compound or anα-hydroxyaldehyde compound is suppressed by causing a base to be present. In the manufacture of the ketal or the acetal derived from theα-hydroxyketone compound or theα-hydroxyaldehyde compound, a post-treatment step after the reaction is carried out in the presence of the base.
