PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a single crystal having an M-Al-B composition, and the single crystal having the M-Al-B composition produced by the method. SOLUTION: The method for producing the single crystal having the M-Al-B (wherein, M is an alkali metal or alkaline earth element) composition comprises: filling a flake-like Al cut out from an ingot, an M-component-supplying source and a boron-supplying source into a reaction vessel so that the flake-like Al and the mixture of the M-component-supplying source and the boron-supplying source form layers alternately; then melting the layered flake-like Al and the layered mixture by providing temperature gradients between the center part and an upper end part and a lower end part of the reaction vessel; and gradually cooling the resulting melt.
