[Also in Division B3] A lap-seam for the side of a container body comprises a deflected edge 48 on one side of the seam engaging the other side to form a gap 50a for solder or adhesive. The material of the container body may be tin plate, aluminium or metal-coated plastics or fibrous material, and the adhesive may be based on polyesters or polyamides which may be thermoplastic or heat-curing. Both sides of the seam may have a deflected edge (5, 9), Fig 4 (not shown), adhesive being applied to one or both sides before or after the edges are deflected, or it may be extruded into the gap (10) after the sheet is formed into tubular shape. Stiffening projections (32), Figs. 5 and 7 (not shown), may be formed in one of the margins which may contact the opposite margin, or a longitudinal rib (35), Fig. 8 (not shown), may be used. In a further form, Fig. 11, which may be used for fibrous material coated with, for example, metal, the edges 55, 59 are turned through 180 degrees. These lap-seams may be combined with interlocked sections. |
