PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a volume image of arbitrary generation. SOLUTION: A storage system has a disk unit in which an application volume where data is read and written from a host computer, a copy volume where a copy of the application volume is stored in designated timing, and a difference volume where difference data of a snap shot of the application volume are stored, are prepared; a control unit for controlling the storage management device; and a storage management device having a channel interface connected with the host computer and a storage interface connected with the disk unit. The control unit copies data of the application volume to the copy volume in designated timing, and stores the difference data of the snap shot in the difference volume in response to a writing request to the application volume, and controls generations of the produced snap shot and the copy volume. When the control unit receives the writing request from the host computer for a volume of a generation different from the application volume, data can be read from the difference volume and/or copy volume.
