PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video recording and reproducing apparatus capable of automatically replacing contents without the need for redundantly recording the contents by a recording apparatus and a reproducing apparatus which are components of the video recording and reproducing apparatus. SOLUTION: When the reproducing apparatus 2 is mounted on the recording apparatus 1, contents recorded on the reproducing apparatus 2 are transferred to the recording apparatus 1 sequentially in the order of earlier recording start times so as to suffice a free capacity of a recording medium of the reproducing apparatus 2 and thereafter contents newly recorded by the recording apparatus 1 are transferred to the reproducing apparatus 2.
