PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce an arithmetic operation load, by avoiding various uses of a map, in control of the suction air volume by a change in an operation characteristic of an intake valve. SOLUTION: When the cylinder suction air volume provided when sucked as a sonic flow is set to the virtual sonic suction air volume Q<SB>D</SB>, and the cylinder suction air volume provided when filling the stroke volume up to the finish from a start of intake air with density and the temperature of suction air on the upstream side of the intake valve, is set to the theoretical maximum suction air volume Q<SB>MAX</SB>, the univocal relationship between the first ratio Q<SB>D</SB>/Q<SB>MAX</SB>and the second ratio Qcyl/Q<SB>MAX</SB>is set on the actual cylinder suction air volume Qcyl, and is stored in a control unit. In actual operation, the second ratio is calculated with the target fresh air volume tQcyl as the cylinder suction air volume Qcyl, and the virtual sonic suction air volume tQ<SB>D</SB>is calculated by the relationship (B101) on the basis of this ratio, and a target suction operating angle tθevent is set on the basis of this volume.
