PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element employing charge transporting polyester excellent in thermal stability in light emission, preservation stability, solubility and compatibility with a solvent and resin, having large emission intensity, high emission efficiency and a long element service life and easy to manufacture; to provide its manufacturing method, and an image display medium using the organic electroluminescent element. SOLUTION: The organic electroluminescent element consists of a pair of electrodes at least one of which comprises a transparent or semitransparent anode and cathode and one or more organic compound layers sandwiched between the pair of electrodes. At least one of the organic compound layers contains at least one kind of charge transporting polyester including a repetitive unit containing, as a partial structure, at least one kind selected from structures expressed by general formulas (I-1) and (I-2).
