PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a movable main spindle type lathe which is reduce in the setting width of a slide cover for separating a machining area and a machining instrument arranging area, and as a result, is reduced in the width of the whole machine, and makes a smooth sliding motion. SOLUTION: The movable main spindle type lathe comprises: a machine cover 3 for covering a machining area R and a machining instrument arranging area S; and a slide cover 50 for separating the machining area R and the machining instrument arranging area S. A tool supporting means and a main spindle chuck 6, which is arranged on a headstock 16 moving in the direction of the width of the machine tool and holds a workpiece, are arranged in the machining area R. The slide cover penetrates the headstock so as to move in the projecting and receding directions. Both ends of the slide cover are connected with each other by means of a cover connecting member so as to form an endless element composed of the slide cover 50 and the cover connecting member. A slide cover guiding means 54 is provided so as to guide the endless element to move on a circulating passage together with the headstock as the headstock moves in the direction of the width of the machine tool.
