Novel theophylline derivatives of the formula wherein R 1 is H or a nicotinyl radical and R 2 is a nicotinyloxyalkyl or nicotinyl radical; and the acid-addition and quaternary ammonium salts thereof, may be obtained by reacting the corresponding compounds of the above formula in which R 1 is H and R 2 is H or a hydroxy-alkyl radical, with excess nicotinyl chloride. The mononicotinyl derivatives are obtained by using a slight molar excess and the di-nicotinyl derivatives are obtained either by using more than two molar amounts of nicotinyl chloride or by reacting a mononicotinyl derivative with a slight molar excess of nicotinyl chloride. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise compounds of Formula I above together with a solid or liquid pharmaceutical carrier or diluent.</p> |
