Polyalkylene terephthalates having less tendency to pill and an improved dye-affinity are made by polycondensing a hydroxyalkyl terephthalate in the presence of a metal alkyl phosphate or a metal hydroxyalkyl phosphate in an amount of at least 0.5% mol. calculated on the amount of terephthalate, whereby metal phosphate groups are incorporated into the polymer molecules. The metal may be Li, Na, K, Ca, Sr, Ba, Mg, Zn or Pb. The glycol component of the polyester may be a polymethylene glycol containing 2-10 carbon atoms or a mixture thereof (e.g. ethylene glycol and butane-1:4-diol). The dicarboxylic acid compound may include a small amount of isophthalic acid. In examples, ester-interchange was effected between dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol in the presence of zinc acetate, manganese acetate or litharge and the product polycondensed in the presence of antimony oxide, germanium oxide or litharge and (1) mono (beta-hydroxyethyl) mono-calcium phosphate; (2) diethyl mono-sodium phosphate; (3) di (hydroxypropyl) mono-potassium phosphate; (4) mono-ethyl mono-magnesium phosphate; (5) mono (hydroxyethyl) mono-plumbous phosphate; (6) mono (hydroxyethyl) di-sodium phosphate.
|
