In an internal combustion engine the power supply for the electric fuel pump motor is such that during starting the full battery voltage is applied across the motor. During running, the motor is supplied from an alternator 26 with a voltage corresponding to roughly half the battery voltage. This ensures that when starting from cold the fuel pump is energized by a sufficient voltage. When start switch 16 is fully depressed, contacting contacts 84 and 82 the battery 10 is connected via relay 86 to starter motor 110 and electric fuel pump motor 120. The field coils 24 of alternator 26 are supplied from battery 10 via voltage regulator 78. During running the battery 10 is charged by rectifier 66. The fuel pump motor is connected to the neutral point 32 of the alternator via diodes 132. Thus during operation the voltage applied to the fuel pump motor is approximately half the battery voltage
