A coating layer is deposited electrolytically on metal objects or other electrically-conducting objects by passing an electric current through an aqueous bath which has a pH of 6-11 and contains a solution or dispersion of (a) a neutralised, water-soluble alkyd resin, with an acid number, in the un-neutralised state, of 10-300, and (b) a formaldehyde condensate. The alkyd resin contains an alpha-substituted is not 5C alkane carboxylic acid which is bonded in the resin, through ester groups. The object which is to be coated forms the anode. The storage stability of the baths is increased.
