Cpds. (I) and (II):- where R = isopropyl, isobutyl or benzyl X = a strong-acid anion (mineral or organic). Cpds. (I) are intermediates in the total chemical synthesis of the alkaloids of rye-ergot. (2R, 5S, 10aS, 10bS)-2-amino-5-benzyl-3,6-dioxo-10b-hydroxy-2-isopropyloctahydro- -8H-oxazolo (3, 2-a) pyrrolo (2, 1-c) pyrazine hydrochloride (a cpd. I), crystallized with 1 mol. of tetrahydrofuran, m.p. 123-124 deg.C.
