A bath of fused Al salts, esp. a mixture of alumina and cryolite is activated by applying at least one electrical current pulse to the bath with a peak voltage value at the point of application dielectric rupture voltage of the bath. During the electrolytic reduction of alumina to Al a low voltage current is passed through a bath of molten alumina and cryolite.
