A box staying unit, suitable for use in a machine of the kind in which side-forming wall portions of a box blank are folded relative to a central bottom-forming portion so that their edges are juxtaposed, includes a former block 23 which has a V-shaped groove (25), Fig. 2 (not shown), and a heater 24 and is advancable to and withdrawable from a corner edge (131) of the folded box blank 13 supported on a former 9, a predetermined length 401 of adhesive coated stay paper 40 being fed during withdrawal of the block to a position adjacent the V-shaped groove (25) where it is severed by knives 28, 29 and applied to the box blank. In the embodiment described, a pneumatic servo 14 is secured to the former block 23, which includes an electrical heating element 24, and to a housing 27. A knife 29 notched at (34), Fig. 5 (not shown), and having a V-shaped slot (35) and cutting edges (36) is slidable relative to the housing 27 against spring bias and coacts with the knife 28 which is fixed to the former block 23. Stay paper 40 coated with thermoplastic adhesive is passed through a removable slotted member 39, over a roller 41 and between an upper resilient strip 43 and a curved lower such strip 44 around the lower part of a feed roller (45) on a shaft 60. The lower guide strip 44 is pressed against the feed roller (45) to corrugate and consequently stiffen the stay paper 40 before the latter is passed through the slot (35) in the knife 29. When the block 23 advances towards the box blank 13, the notch (34) of the knife 29 engages a corner of the former 9. As the block 23 continues to advance, the fixed knife 28 and the slidable knife 29 co-operate to sever the length 401 of stay paper which is then applied to the box blank 13. A bar 54 slidable in a fixed housing 12 has a slot 59 through which passes the feed roller shaft 60 with lost motion. When the lost motion between the slot 59 and the shaft 60 has been taken up, the bar 54 carrying the guide 44 &c. is advanced by movement of the housing 27 and a rack 61 on the bar meshing a gear (62) fast with an oscillating plate 63 drives the latter. A pawl 64 on the plate 63 then over-runs relative to a ratchet wheel 65 fast with the feed roller (45). On the return stroke of the servo 14, the bar 54 moves back under spring bias and the plate 63 is turned in the opposite direction, so that the pawl 64 drives the ratchet wheel 65 and the feed roller (45) to advance a further length 401 of stay paper 40. A screw 52 adjusts the effective length of the slot 59 and hence the length of the strip 401 of stay paper which is advanced. The block 23 may be formed with a slot (231), Fig. 6 (not shown), to produce flanged bottom boxes.
