A road roller capable of producing a selected high or low inertia force has an out-of-balance shaft 2 supported at each end in the interior of the roller body 1 in a pair of side by-side roller or other bearings 3, 4 in a housing 7 suspended in an annular plate 9 which permits slight axial play without radial play of the shaft 2 and is secured by its outer edge to the roller body. The annular plates 9 may be provided with apertures or consist of a number of disc-shaped laminations which may present a fan-shaped crosssection. The shaft 2 has two fixed inertia weights 11, 12 and two rotatable weights 14, 15 with resilient pads 16, 17 engageable by an arm 13 of the fixed weight. When the shaft 2 is rotated anticlockwise (Fig. 2) the rotatable weights are rotated by the arms 13 through the pads 17 and oppositely disposed on the shaft 2 from the fixed weights to provide a low effective inertia. On clockwise rotation of the shaft 2 the arms 13 rotate the weights 14, 15 in line with the weights 11, 12 to provide a large effective inertia. |
