A surface emitting laser apparatus is disclosed. A first substrate (202) is disposed between a first electrode layer (201) and a first reflective layer (204). An active region (206) is disposed between the first reflective layer and a second reflective layer (208). A first semiconductor layer (210) can be disposed between a second electrode layer (214) and the second reflective layer.
